Ice

Captured deep within Maligne Canyon in the Canadian Rockies, this photograph reveals a landscape transformed by winter.

During spring and summer, meltwater rushes aggressively through the canyon, carving its way between towering walls of limestone and continuing a process that has shaped the landscape over thousands of years. But when winter arrives, the canyon changes completely. The water slows, freezes, and the same place once filled with the roar of a powerful river becomes still enough to explore on foot.

Walking across the frozen canyon floor is a surreal experience. Surrounded by immense rock walls sculpted by the water flowing beneath your feet, you enter a world normally hidden and inaccessible. Along the canyon walls, dripping water freezes layer by layer, forming curtains of ice, towering frozen waterfalls, and delicate icicles suspended in the darkness.

This image moves closer, focusing on one of those fleeting formations. Illuminated against the deep shadows of the canyon, the icicles reveal intricate textures, translucent blues, and sculptural forms created entirely by water, gravity, and cold. What appears permanent exists for only a season. With the return of warmer weather, the ice will melt and the canyon will once again fill with rushing water.

More than a study of ice, this photograph captures a rare moment of transformation—the same water that carved the canyon frozen temporarily within it. A reminder that even the most powerful landscapes are never truly still, and that sometimes the most extraordinary experiences are found by stepping into a place at precisely the right moment.
